Private Space

2003

A private space is generally a space that grants you privacy and intimacy. When you have the opportunity to shut yourself in it, you can do everything you want in there. You create a boundary between yourself and the others.

In this project MDR realized a room where people can find privacy outside their house. The room has every comfort: a sofa, a table, a TV, a mirror, some pictures on the wall, books, etc.
In reality privacy is violated by a hidden camcorder put into the room that records everything that happens inside. Outside, in another room, you can see the Private Space, with the people that are inside at that moment. The PRIVATE SPACE experiment allows the individual to choose between looking at the other to discover oneself (this is the case of those who watch the projection) and letting oneself be oneself because they are not seen (those who are in the room). Both cases present an illusion of freedom because you are in both cases closely inspected by other people.
